School of Sanctuary

At Kilkenny City Vocational School, we are very proud to be a School of Sanctuary. Our school is committed to inclusion and inclusive practice, providing a learning environment that supports all of our students. A School of Sanctuary is a school that is dedicated to being a safe and welcoming place for all, particularly those seeking sanctuary.

Kilkenny City Vocational School provides a happy, healthy and safe learning environment where our diverse student cohort can meet their own individual educational potential.

A School of Sanctuary is a school that supports its students, staff and wider community, it extends a welcome to everyone as equal, valued members of the school community. It is a school that is proud to be a place of safety and inclusion for all. At Kilkenny City Vocational School, we have always celebrated diversity and seen it as one of our greatest strengths. We are proud to have a multi-denominational, co-educational school, welcoming students and families from many countries, diverse backgrounds, beliefs and faiths.

Eighteen different nationalities attend Kilkenny City Vocational School and all of our students and families are made feel very welcome and safe.

There are three simple principles to being a School of Sanctuary:

  1. LEARN about what it means to be seeking sanctuary.
  2. TAKE POSITIVE ACTION to embed concepts of welcome, safety and inclusion within school and the wider community.
  3. SHARE your vision and achievements - be proud!

In Kilkenny City Vocational School, our core values coincide with those of the School of Sanctuary and it is a source of great pride for us that many of our students, including many who have arrived in our community in need and of and seeking sanctuary have overcome enormous obstacles to achieve success in life, whether that be academic or personal.

We will continue to welcome those in need of our help and support. We know that while we can be proud of our work in supporting and welcoming all those in need of sanctuary, they themselves bring far more to our school: they add to the diversity of our community, their life experiences, aspirations, resilience and strength adds to and enhances ours and together we can overcome the obstacles and do our small part in making this world a better place for everyone.
